The Universe Time Calendar

Human beings are very good at counting to ten and hopeless at counting to a billion. Tell somebody the Earth is 4.5 billion years old and they will nod politely; the number means nothing, because nothing in our experience is bigger than a lifetime.

So here is a different clock. Take the 13.8 billion years since the Big Bang and compress the whole thing into one calendar year. January the 1st is the beginning of everything. Midnight on the 31st of December is this exact moment, right now, while you read this.

On that scale, one second is 437 years. One day is nearly 38 million years. And the results are not what anybody expects.

Look at what that calendar actually shows. The Universe existed for two-thirds of the year before Earth even formed. Life spent a month as pond scum. The dinosaurs — the great symbol of ancient, unimaginable time — only turned up on Christmas Day.

And us? Every cave painting, every pyramid, every empire, every prophet, every war, every invention, every person you have ever loved or hated: all of it happens in the last five seconds of the year.

That is not a reason to feel small. It is a reason to look at what we have managed to do to the place in half of one second.
